This video is about painting the same scene in Oils and Watercolor. I demonstrate and talk about my approach to painting with these two mediums. I've used Oil colors in opaque fashion and watercolors in a transparent form.

In this video, I paint the same scene side by side in Oils and Watercolor and compare the painting methods in these mediums. Here are the differences in the way I use these painting mediums.

Making your own oil painting panels has 5 major advantages

1. Control The texture

You can make them highly textured or highly smooth and every level in between, depending on your preference and the type of painting you want to paint on them.

2. Cost-effectiveness

As you make them yourself, they turn out to be very cheap as compared to readymade ones. This saves you some money and you can paint more!

3. Custom Sizes

You can make them of exact sizes that you want and don't have to be restricted to the standard sizes that market provides.

4. Easy To Dry

As we are using a board as the base, the paintings made on these panels are easy to dry as compared to paintings on lose canvas.

5. Easy To Frame and Ship

Framing these panels is easy and they don't even need a sturdy backing as the board itself has enough strength. You can also ship them unframed without the fear of something poking through it during transit.

Growing up, I had always viewed the original artwork as something ONLY rich and famous people had. A misconception engraved in us since childhood!! We don’t need to be art geeks visiting art studios and gallery shows to understand and appreciate the work, nor do you require mansions to hold artworks. Your beautiful apartment home/office cabin is very much capable of displaying art and getting appreciated by your friends/colleagues.  You can start off by having simple landscapes and grow along to complex, abstract art forms.     Along with owning art, you can also use them as a brilliant gifting idea. Art can be a wonderful gift for any occasion. It’s quite a compliment that you thought enough of that person that you ventured into the art buying territory. But you need to consider some points when you buy art for yourself or as gifts.

Stay Small

It’s easier for someone to live with and find that perfect place for a small-sized piece of art. Be it on a wall, by a bedside corner, or an office table.

Subject

Don’t get caught up with being too particular the subject. Try to consider a beautiful landscape or something that appeals to everyone.

Frame it!

If you give somebody art that is not ready to display, that can be irritating, usually ending up in a drawer. Don’t fall for the custom framing thought; you might end up spending more on the frame than the artwork itself. A ready-made frame available online or a photo studio near you will serve the purpose.

Buy directly from the artists

Buying art directly from artists means that you are supporting the artist and keeping his art-making happening. Also, beautiful original art doesn't have to be expensive. Often, it costs no more than you’d spend on a jacket at the mall or a dinner at a nice restaurant. It is time you start changing the ‘poster’ frames adorning walls in your home, office or at the business premise you run, with original pieces of art. And no, you don’t need to think of buying originals from top-notch artists you usually see or read about. There are a host of good artists making interesting work out there. Most of these artists are into art sales to keep their passion alive & running and not merely for the rich dividends.

Mandar

Painting in Artrage is a convenient way to paint in oil colors. I use the Artrage app on iPad Pro and not the desktop version of the application.

Though I do not find painting in it as easy as painting with real colors, it is a good alternative. The ease of painting in real oils is clearly attributed to years of experience of using real oil colors. On the other hand, I have been painting in Artrage only for a few months.

You can do a lot using layers and all conveniences of a digital medium but I prefer to use only 1 layer and keep the painting process as close to real oils as possible.

Today's painting

Here is a painting that I did in Artrage today. It is still very rough and a lot more details can be added.

I have recorded a script of this painting and with Desktop version of Artrage I can run the script and the app actually paints the painting again on a different sized canvas and at a different resolution, if you want. So, it is not a video clip but a painting being painted again! A nice feature that I haven't seen in any other painting app so far.
